The Mountain and the War of 1812

An effort is being made to compile a list of Mountain locations that have War of 1812 connections. These might include such things as trails used by the forces on both sides, camp locations, family homesteads that supplied or billeted soldiers or any Mountain families that had members fight in the war. It would be nice to have as comprehensive a list as possible, including any place on the Mountain that had a connection with the events of the War of 1812. We would like to hear from those who have a story or information to share so that we can begin the task of compiling and documenting the list. Please direct your responses and suggestions via e-mail to the Webmaster at bernhardt.r@gmail.com with a subject line of "War of 1812".

Introducing Our New Website

Our focus is on our Mountain community as it is today - with a conscious awareness of our past and how we got to where we are now. This site is intended to be historical - without being too technical or academic.

There will be references to community events, community organizations, community institutions, local photography, natural history, sports, cultural activities, our religious communities, and even politics - but no one of these areas will be our primary focus. I treasure the hope that this website can gradually become an Internet meeting place for those who love our Mountain community. - a place where ideas, insights, and dreams may be shared. We don't intend to duplicate what others are already doing in print and on the Internet, but rather to highlight and encourage their efforts.

I claim no long mountain lineage, no insider connections with the "movers and shakers" of our community, and not even an impressive knowledge of our community history. I simply enjoy the Mountain community as a valued place to live out my days and I would like to share the reasons for my enthusiasm.

Your comments and suggestions for the future development of hamiltonmountain.ca will always be welcomed and considered.

A new "Mountain Meeting Place"

The Millionaire Drive Inn, formerly at Upper James and Mohawk.Throughout the unfolding history of the Mountain community there have always been community meeting places. Around the turn of the Century (1900 that is) it was perhaps the Mountain View Hotel or maybe Daniel Cotter's Hotel (on the corner of Concession and Upper Wentworth). More recently, in the time between 1961 and 1976 it was for many the Millionaire Drive Inn at Upper James and Mohawk. Until very recently the Mountain Plaza Mall was an unofficial community meeting place. But now the choices are not so obvious. Even the ubiquitous Tim Horton's outlets for which our city is famous are now mostly just a place to drive-through rather than a place to meet. So, for those who love the Mountain, and there are many of you, we thought that we should create a new meeting place here on the Internet. We hope that this site will provoke many nostalgic memories and inspire many conversations. So, pour yourself a fresh cup of coffee and linger awhile. We hope that you will find much to enjoy.
